Carbon Health, Amwell and El Camino Health C-level executives and presidents join us

On July 1, Vator, along with HP, will be holding the Future of Virtual Care event as part of the  Invent Health series. We will also hold a separate Q&A Town Hall session with select speakers on June 24 (get your tickets here!)

The #inventhealth salons are quarterly "intimate" events, where the audience and select speakers interact around one topic. Topics have included "Mental Health", "Reinventing the doctor's role", "Future of clinics", "Lifestyle", etc and are discussed by influencers from various backgrounds to provide a 360-degree perspective. The goal is to create an environment conducive to creating connections amongst guests and to have a solid discussion and/or debate around one area of healthcare that's ripe for innovation.

The topic this quarter is: “The Future of Virtual Care.” We live in a data-rich world in which technology is gathering huge swaths of population data including our own unique real-time inputs that combined can generate incredible new insights about our health. Moreover, due to COVID-19, society has had to embrace telehealth and remote services as a new form of lifestyle and care procedure to reduce virus transmissions. What are these virtual care protocols, and new devices in the home designed to engage and communicate with us, monitor and measure our activity, to ultimately collect, organize and analyze?

Here's who will be speaking:

Bruce Harrison has been President of Silicon Valley Medical Development, an affiliate of El Camino Health, since the winter of 2018. He previously served as senior vice president of strategy and operations at Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group. He worked on relationships between payers, providers groups, health systems, and data analytics to help make the health system work better for everyone.

For six years, he concurrently served as vice president of network development at Stanford Health Care and as chief administrative officer of University HealthCare Alliance. His previous experience includes executive leadership roles at WellStar Health System, Saint Agnes Healthcare, and Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation.

El Camino Health includes two not-for-profit acute care hospitals in Los Gatos and Mountain View and urgent care, multi-specialty care and primary care locations across Santa Clara County.

Eren Bali is Co-founder and of CEO digital health company Carbon Health, which he founded in October 2015. Prior to that, he founded Udemy, a startup built an open platform to allow users to teach or learn from one another online. The company was the winning startup at Vator Splash in 2010.

Bali was also the founding engineer and director of engineering at SpeedDate and a developer at BitGravity. His first startup was a developer of 3D simulations of real estate that were under construction.

Bali graduated from Middle Eastern Turkey University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and double major degree in mathematics.

Carbon Health combines telehealth and in-person care. With its app, patients can manage appointments, billing, pharmacy refills and lab results from their phone. They can also talk with doctors and staff for quick answers to their questions. The company also offers primary and urgent care clinics, which don't require a membership or fees from the patient.

It recently raised a $28 million round, bringing its total funding to $75 million. Investors include DCVC, Brookfield Growth Partners, DCVC, founders from Flatiron Health and Clover Health, Builders VC, Bullpen Capital, Javelin Venture Partners and Two Sigma Ventures.

Dr. Peter Antall has been Chief Medical Officer at American Well since 2012. He is also President and CMO at the Online Care Group, a telehealth network, where he manages over 200 physicians.

Antall has built a thriving pediatric practice, a hospitalist company, and has written software for mobile apps. He has developed a credentialing program, and has developed tools to measure and manage clinical quality in telehealth.

Founded in 2006, Amwell provides a platform that supports telehealth during urgent, acute and post-acute care needs. It also supports chronic care management and healthy living.

The company currently reaches 150 million individuals through over 55 health plan partners, including 33 Blue Plans and UnitedHealthcare. It has over 240 health system partners, including Cleveland Clinic, Commonspirit Health and Northwell, which represent over 2,000 hospitals. Amwell also has 36,000 employers on its platform.

Amwell recently raised a $194 million in Series C funding round and reportedly confidentially filed for an IPO.

Udemy is a website that enables anyone to teach and learn online. Udemy tries to democratize online education by making it fast, easy and free to create online courses. Udemy is an open platform, so anyone can build an online course by posting videos, presentations, writing blog posts, or hosting live virtual classroom sessions.

Udemy tries to solve a simple problem: there are millions of smart people in the world (authors, speakers, coaches, trainers, subject matter experts and teachers) who want to teach over the internet. Currently, it costs $10,000 to create a website to teach, and there are thousands of instructors doing this (we've talked to them; they hate it). We provide instructors with the ability to create their own course without any up-front costs. That way, they no longer have to deal with the technology and can focus entirely on teaching.

Udemy Live is Udemy’s live virtual conferencing and classroom tool. It is entirely web-based and built on component architecture. Each component was built separately, and there is an internal API so third party developers can build components on top of Udemy’s virtual conferencing tool. The API is not currently public.

Udemy was founded by MobileCrunch writer Gagan Biyani, Eren Bali and Oktay Caglar. Eren and Oktay worked at SpeedDate.com, an online dating site that has received over $8M in funding from Menlo Ventures.

Udemy will start by focusing on a specific niche: Poker education. We will roll out Udemy to enter the $100M business of online poker education. Udemy has deals with more than 15 extremely popular poker instructors to teach on Udemy Poker over the internet. After that niche, Udemy will begin to enter additional markets in which there is a willingness to pay by consumers and a clear set of high-quality instructors interested in teaching.
