Given Kordestani's ties to Google, could this mean further collaboration between the two companies?

There's so much happening over at Twitter right now that it's almost hard to keep up with it all. From getting a new CEO, to potentially changing one of its core features, to letting go of a huge percentage of its staff, it seems like the company will barely recognize itself soon.

The latest change is another internal move, one that users of the service wouldn't ever notice, but one that might portend interesting things down the road.

On Wednesday, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced in a Tweet that Googler Omid Kordestani has been named as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors at Twitter.

Kordestani followed that up with a series of his own Tweets regarding his new appointment.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Kordestani  started his career in Silicon Valley as a Product Marketing Manager at HP,  followed by a series of start-up experiences at early smartphone innovator, GO Corporation, and interactive gaming company, 3DO. In 1995 he was one of the early employees at  Netscape, eventually leading Netscape's sales and business development organization as a vice president.

He was employee number 11 at Google, where he led business operations. Kordestani left Google in 2009, but returned in August of 2014 as its Chief Business Officer, a position he held for a year. He is now listed as a Senior Advisor to Alphabet and Google.

Despite only officially taking over as CEO only nine days ago, after three months of interim status, Jack Dorsey already seems to be putting his stamp on the company.

That has included reports of the company straying from its original 140 character limit, as well as the launch of Moments, a new feature that is designed to curate content by aggregating Tweets and photos from live events and breaking-news situations.

Perhaps Dorsey's biggest, and most controversial move, came on Tuesday, when it was revealed that the company would be cutting 336 jobs, or 8% of its global workforce. This is the first mass layoff in Twitter's entire history.

Dorsey seems set on making Twitter more efficient, as well as more enticing for its users by making it easier to find content and for them to express themselves.

Twitter and Google already have some ties, have partnered up earlier this year to allow Tweets to be included in Google search results. On top of that, Twitter announced in April new measurement and buying tools through DoubleClick, Google's ad serving service.

Given Kordestani's deep ties to Google, perhaps his appointment to Twitter's board is a sign of futher, and deeper, collaboration between the two companies, making it even easier to find Tweets and for Twitter partners to serve ads.

"We're excited for Omid and very happy for Twitter. Omid was instrumental in establishing Google's business and helped us develop really close, longstanding partnerships across the industry. We wish him every success in the years ahead," a Google spokesperson told VatorNews.
