Intel Capital, Intel’s investment arm, invested $26 million in six companies: open source mobile software solutions company Borqs; location-based mapping platform and tools provider CloudMade; QuantumFilm-based image sensor vendor InVisage; open source online video platform Kaltura; online authentication provider SecureKey Technologies; and unified communications and collaboration software provider VisionOSS Solutions.The companies share little in common except that they aim to function on multiple devices and open platforms.
Here’s a brief rundown of the six lucky startups:
Borqs (Beijing) is described as “an Android software integrator for mobile devices.” One of its products, OPhone OS (short for Open Mobile Phone Operating System), is an open platform founded on Android and built for mobile terminal software for the Internet, 
CloudMade (Menlo Park, Calif.) provides more than 16,000 developers with the tools and APIs needed to build location-based applications and services for Web and mobile platforms. Examples include Map My Tracks, an outdoor social networking app; GayCities, an app for finding nearby gay bars and restaurants; and OffMaps, an app that lets you search maps without an Internet connection. 
Kaltura (New York) builds an open source online video platform that over 100,000 websites now use. The platform offers support for virtually all online video needs: video management, searching, uploading, importing, editing, annotating, remixing, sharing, and advertising Some of Kaltura’s most prominent customers include Sony Music, Wikipedia, AAA and Pepsi. 
InVisage (Menlo Park, Calif.) is developing QuantumFilm, new image sensors intended to replace silicon as the light capture material in mobile devices. With QuantumFilm, camera phones and digital cameras will be able to record higher resolution photographs than currently capable.
SecureKey (Toronto) provides a combined hardware and software solution aiming to eliminate the risk of fraud. The company relies on credit and debit “smartcards” enhanced with advanced cryptographic capabilities.
VisionOSS (Reading, UK), abbreviated (VOSS), provides a unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) service delivery and management platform to service providers and large enterprise customers.
