Foursquare teams with Deezer to reward music check-ins

Seven concert check-ins on Foursquare and Deezer users can win free 3 month subscription

Ok, image for a second that you are Foursquare. You were pretty huge in 2009 and 2010, and then interest started to wane as other companies like Facebook got in on the check-in action. You have to find new ways to not only stay relevant, but to monetize.

So what do you do? The answer is two-fold: first, you start looking internationally. Second, you find ways to incentivize your userbase to use your service by offering them deals and discounts.

Luckily for Foursquare, the company has just found a partner that give it both of those things at the same time!

The check-in app has now partnered with music streaming service Deezer, it was announced Tuesday, in order to give Deezer users the chance to win a 3 month Deezer Premium+ subscription if they check-in at a minimum number of concert venues.

"Here at Deezer, we believe in unlimited music in your pocket – but we’re also big live music fans. That’s why we teamed up with Foursquare to offer exclusive perks and rewards for the millions of you who love seeing your favourite bands play live," the company wrote in a blog post.

"Foursquare is a great way to keep up with your favourite artists, share your concert check-ins with friends, and even see what shows are trending nearby."

Here's how it works:

All the customer has to do is like the Deezer page on Foursquare, and then like check-in at seven different venues. Over 15,000 music venues in 15 countries are taking part in the offer.

Checking in at one venue unlocks the first level; three check-ins unlocks level two; and then the coveted seven check-ins gets the user to level 3.

Here's the thing though: at that point, the user will be eligible to win the top prize of the 3 month subscription. Nobody is guaranteed to win anything. But, since checking-in on Foursquare requires basically nothing from any Deezer users, I can definitely see some hardcore music lovers taking part. There is absolutely no downside for the user.

The upside, in actuality, is all for Foursquare and for Deezer.

For Paris-based Deezer, of course, will make a name for itself in the extremely crowded music streaming space, where it has to contend with Spotify, Apple, Google and countless others.

At the same time, the benefit for Foursquare is, not does it gets a chance to expand to all of the international markets where Deezer is based, but has found a way to incentivize check-ins, thereby increasing its numbers and, by extention, its ad revenue. And I have no doubt that the company will also be getting whole new set of ad partners in Deezer and all of those concert venues. This was a major win for Foursquare.

This offer is only available to Foursquare users in the countries where Deezer is currently operating: Brazil, Mexico, UK, Ireland, Indonesia, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Poland.

VatorNews has reached out to Foursquare to find out more details about the Deezer partnership and we will update if we hear more.
