Amazon once again wins big at the Golden Globes

The streaming service won Best Comedy for the second year in a row, while Netflix came up empty

Back in 2013 Netflix’s made history when it earned  a collective 14 Emmy nominations, for shows like House of Cards, Arrested Development, and Hemlock Grove. However in the last couple of years it has actually been Amazon that has become the studio to beat.

Following it's Best Series win for Transparent at the 2015 Golden GlobesAmazon was able to repeat that success again on Sunday night, again taking two statues, this time for another of it's series, Mozart in the Jungle.

The show actually wound up winning the same awards as Transparent did as last year: the award for "Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy," as well as "Best Actor in a TV Comedy," for Gael Garcia Bernal.

Mozart in the Jungle, a show that I, admittedly, know very little about and have never seen, is about a conductor and his interactions with his orchestra. Apparently it's good, so maybe I should go check it out.

Once again, Netflix came up completely empty this year, with Orange is the New Black losing in both of the categories it was nominated in, as did House of Cards and Grace and Frankie. The lack of awards has to be especially disappointing, since Netflix actually led all networks with a total of eight nominations.

Still, don't feel too bad for Netflix: it was able to do one thing that Amazon could not: get a nomination for it's first original film, Beasts of No Nation, which scored a nomination for Idris Elba in the "Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture" category. Amazon could not do the same with its first original film, the Spike Lee directed "Chi-Raq," which was also released in 2015. So, once again, Netflix is leading the way.

This year half of the 10 series nominated for the top honor were from streaming services, and only one, Empire, aired on a traditional broadcast network, with Netflix scoring another nomination for Narcos. Even Hulu made it into the ceremony this year with a nomination for Casual

With Netflix getting the most nominations, and Amazon now regularly winning top prizes, there really has been a sea change in the television industry, on par with when cable shows all of the sudden started getting all of the nominations 10 or so years ago. Now it's not hard to envision a future where nearly every major nominee with have never actually aired on a television at all.

The Golden Globes on Twitter

As always, we turn to Twitter to see what people really cared about (hint: it's not whether or not a streaming service won any awards).

In all, this year's Golden Globes generated over 4.4 million Tweets around the globe. The top three moments were:

Lady Gaga winning "Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film," for American Horror Story: Hotel. First, I just have to say that Kirsten Dunst was robbed for her excellent work on Fargo. Secondly, what is it with Lady Gaga and award shows? She dominated last year's Oscars and Emmys too.

Second was Leonardo DiCaprio winning for "Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama," for The Revenant, and then Mr. Robot wining for "Best Series - Drama."

The most Tweeted about stars were Gaga (naturally), then Jennifer Lawrence, who won "Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy," for Joy, followed by DiCaprio.
