The company has been trying for a while now to change its name but has continually run into problems. Now, finally, it has found the solution, coming up with a name that both conveys the mission of the company, and also does not step on anyone else's toes.
Say goodbye to Garantia Data. Say hello to Redis Labs.
"We have thought for a long time that we should change our name to show our commitment to Redis and to the Redis community, and show our dedication to making Redis one of the leading database choices for developers," Ofer Bengal, chief executive officer and co-founder of Redis Labs, told me in an interview.
The new name serves the purpose and vision of the company, he said.
"We are all about Redis," he said. "Our focus is on Redis, and we make it our mission to make Redis one of the databases of the future."
As you may have surmised by the opening paragraph, this is not the first time Garantia Data has attempted to change its name.
Back in November, when the company announced its Series A round, the company initially also announced a new name: RedisDB. It even acquired the domain redisdb.com for that purpose.
The company quickly reversed that move, though, explaining in a blog post at the time that Salvatore Sanfilippo, the creator of Redis, had asked the company not to do so, which Garantia granted.
So what is different this time?
"Last time we got a reaction from the open source community, as well as the creator of Redis, that they were concerned that name may create confusion," Bengal told me. "They thought that it might confuse people within the open source community, since the name was RedisDB and Redis is a database."
Since then, the company has viewed various names, coming up with Redis Labs. Seeking to avoid the same problem it encountered last time, it checked with the community, who found no issues this time around.
Founded in March 2011, Redis Labs offers a fully-managed Redis Cloud service, that helps app developers benefit from infinite scalability, high availability, top performance, and hands-off management.
The company has raised $13 million, including $9 million in a series A funding round led by Bain Capital Ventures and Carmel Ventures in November.
The company now has over 1,300 paying customers, and a community that numbers in the tens of thousands. Over 45,000 Redis Cloud databases have been created to date.
