Read more...Obama came full circle last night. After announcing his bid for reelection via social media back in April 2011, he announced his victory via social media last night—before he took the stage to deliver his victory speech in Chicago.
At 11:14 pm ET, Obama tweeted: “This happened because of you. Thank you.” That was followed a minute later with: “We’re all in this together. That’s how we campaigned, and that’s who we are. Thank you. –bo” And that was followed a minute later by a pic of Barack and Michelle hugging, which broke the record for the most retweeted tweet of all time within 22 minutes of being posted. As of 8:30 am PT, the pic has been retweeted over 674,000 times. The previous record-holder, Justin Beiber, tweeted in September “RIP Avalanna. I love you,” which was retweeted over 200,000 times.
The pic was posted on Facebook at the same time.
The Obama campaign also sent out an email to supporters at 11:30 pm ET last night announcing his victory before taking the stage.
The tweets came shortly after all major networks—including FoxNews—called Ohio for Obama. But they came shortly before Karl Rove threw a doughy fit and accused FoxNews of betraying its conservative brethren by calling Ohio too soon.
But we all knew that no matter who won, there were going to be some epic memes today. You’re welcome.
