Facebook unveils new Events page design

Users will now have a choice to view upcoming events on a calendar grid

The Facebook Events page is something I rarely use. I always found the design to be kind of clunky, and if I get invited to something I care about I generally respond right away. Otherwise, I don’t even bother and they just kind of pile up in there until I finally feel the need to clean house.

Maybe now, though, I will start to feel differently about it.

Facebook is revamping its Events page, Facebook software engineer Bob Baldwin wrote on the company blog Wednesday.

The revamped Events page came as apart of a hackathon, which Baldwin describes as “a time when engineers across the company get together to hack on new ideas and try to build a prototype overnight.”

A hackathon last year led to the Events permalink on the Facebook homepage. This time it led to an entire redesign.

In what can only be described as a stroke of genius, Facebook Events will now, wait for it, be available for viewing on a calendar, along with a brand new list view to choose from. Photos andvideos are incorporated, along with a new icon showing the current date.

“A couple of us felt there should be a better way for people to see their friends’ birthdays a few days in advance and make plans for the weekend. So we built it,” wrote Baldwin.

The calendar view lays out upcoming events on a calendar grip, with the events on that day displayed inside each box. Future months can be viewed by scrolling down, while pending events are shown at the top.

The new list view also have a calendar, but it is to help with navigation. Click on a date and the pending events will be listed on the right side of the screen, letting users respond to invitations and write birthday messages.

There is a button at the top which allows users to switch between the two views.

"Today we announce a new list and calendar view that makes it easier to scan upcoming birthdays, invites and suggested events. Scroll through these events and respond to invites without leaving the page,” Baldwin wrote. 

“Suggested events are recommended to you based on your friends, Pages you like, places you've checked in at and the apps you use on Facebook.”
