NHRA Honors Those Lost on 9/11

 On September 5, 2011, the NHRA presented a very special tribute in recognition of the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks as part of the pre-race ceremonies at the world’s most prestigious drag race – the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil in Indianapolis.

The special ceremony opened with a moving 9/11 video tribute, and then each qualifying pro driver for Sunday’s elimination racing helped to unveil a 60x30 foot banner from the top of the Wally Parks Tower that read “09-11-01: We Will Never Forget.”

Several special guests took part in the ceremony, including Sergeant Major (retired) Tony Rose, as well as John Caviani, from the U.S. Army and recipient of the Medal of Honor, and Debra Borza, mother of the youngest victim of Flight 93.

The ceremony began prior to the 11:00 am start time of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event. Mr. Rose spoke about his miraculous survival of the attack on the Pentagon, while Ms. Borza introduced a special Ride of Valor motorcycle parade to honor the victims of Flight 93.  Mr. Caviani then led the large crowd in a standing ovation for all active military members and veterans who continue their work to keep the nation safe. A 10-unit parade of first responders and fire trucks was also recognized, as the caravan rolled down the legendary dragstrip’s return road while fans showed their appreciation by standing and applauding as they drove past.

After the parade, the Wounded Warriors of Fort Knox joined future U.S. Army Soldiers, as well as many local soldiers from the Indianapolis Recruiting Battalion, and unfurled an incredibly large American flag prior to the invocation. A special rendition of “Taps” was performed by a military bugler as they honored those lost during 9/11, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by an Indianapolis police officer, Mr. Christopher Wilburn. A local color guard marched into position and skydiver Jason Peters soared onto the Lucas Oil Raceway, landing at the 1000 foot mark of the track. It was a sincerely moving time for many of the military and first responder personnel who were in attendance that day.

The honors continued onto the track when racing started.  Legendary Funny Car driver and team owner, John Force, unveiled a commemorative Funny Car honoring those lost during the 9/11 tragedy.

Sept 11, 2001 was a moment in history that changed America forever. Drivers, spectators, and everyone at the Mac Tools Nationals did an excellent job of recognizing the importance of that fateful day.
