Groupon launches National Burger Weekend

In honor of National Burger Month and Memorial Day, Groupon is running a 3-day deal on burgers

Did you know that this month (May) is National Burger Month? No, you say? Shame on you.

It’s okay. I didn’t know it was National Burger Month either. Until Groupon announced its new promotion in celebration of National Burger Month and Memorial Day weekend at the same time. Hello, National Burger Weekend! This weekend, starting Friday and ending Sunday, you can get killer deals from the best local burger joints near you.

National Burger Weekend is Groupon’s first multi-day national themed promotion. To get America in fighting shape for barbecuing season, Groupon has partnered with over 350 burger restaurants across the country to deliver deals of 50% off and more on gourmet burgers. For example, if you live in San Francisco, you can get $10 for $20 worth of food at Mel’s Drive-In.

But don’t be fooled by the company’s jocularity. Groupon takes burgers seriously, which is why it’s also offering behind-the-scenes video clips featuring select burger eateries. It all looks so delicious… (True story: I once watched an episode of California’s Gold where Huell Howser goes to In & Out, and the next day I went out to get In & Out for dinner and bumped into a friend of mine there who had seen the same episode.)

“Groupon is kicking off summer with a fun national promotion celebrating an American icon, the cheeseburger,” said Aaron Cooper, Groupon’s SVP of Marketing, in a statement. “We’ve handpicked our favorite burgers by city to celebrate the unofficial start of barbeque season across the country.”

The promotion started Friday, May 27, at 12:01 am local time, and ends Sunday, May 29, at 11:59 pm. And to sweeten the deal even more, Groupon is tying the promotion with a charity fundraiser. In honor of Memorial Day, Groupon is encouraging subscribers to donate to Not Alone, an organization that provides free and confidential mental health counseling for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and combat stress. No need to go committing yourself to a big donation either. Subscribers can contribute donations in $1, $5, or $25 increments on their cities’ landing pages, and each donation will be matched by an anonymous donor.
