Full bio

Mr. Layton Tamberlin

Current chairman of Samedaydoctor and co-founder of Sullivan Street partners, Layton Tamberlin lives in London with his wife and two young children. He is a specialist in investment and has amassed twelve years of experience in finance while working for several major firms in the London area. During that time he has participated and overseen the acquisitions of several well known companies.

Born in Shrewsbury, Mr. Tamberlin grew up with an older brother who was diagnosed with severe autism at an early age. The challenges that his brother’s autism presented for him, and for all of his family members, are a source of Layton Tamberlin’s passion for supporting public services for autistic adults. In 1994 Mr. Tamberlin left home to attend Keble College, Oxford. He studied at Keble until 1998, when he graduated with a master’s degree in Mathematics and Philosophy

Professional Experience

In 1998, Layton Tamberlin was hired by the firm where he would work for the next four years and gain invaluable experience in mergers and acquisitions—Merrill Lynch. While there, he had a hand in several high-profile stock offerings and acquisitions. Some of the highlights include the initial public offerings of iTouch, the Generics Group, and the PHS Group. He also helped in the acquisitions of Newsquest and Rockware Group. The experience Mr. Tamberlin gained at Merrill Lynch gave him the appetite to participate in acquisitions from a principal’s perspective and so he left Merrill Lynch UK in 2002 in pursuit of another challenge. Layton went to work for the founders of TDR Capital, Manjit Dale and Stephen Robertson. The firm was backed by the Tudor Group and was therefore able to immediately become a player in Western Europe’s financial investment sector. TDR Capital sought out and invested in several promising business opportunities, as well as overseeing and participating in several major acquisitions. The deal making aspect of the business was particularly suited to Mr. Tamberlin’s skills, and he participated in the acquisition transactions of Resolution, Pearl, Pizza Express, ASK, Algeco, and Williams Scotsman. In 2009, he left TDR Capital.

After leaving TDR Capital, Mr Tamberlin joined Samedaydoctor as chairman. Samedaydoctor runs medical clinics where patients can obtain immediate attention from general practitioners for minor injuries, basic ailments, and sexually transmitted infections.  Founded in 2003, the company spread throughout the United Kingdom in 2007. Recently, according to the Manchester Evening News, Mr. Tamberlin led the parent company of Samedaydoctor to acquire the Manchester franchise. Since Samedaydoctor opened, they have seen more than 100,000 patients, 5,000 of which came from the Manchester branch. The Manchester branch will now expand its services and hours.

Alongside Richard Sanders, a former member of the Group Executoive at the John Lewis Partnership, Mr. Tamberlin founded the Sullivan Street Partners in February 2010. He has brought his experience in investment and deal creation to this new company which, like TDR Capital before it, seeks out selective promising business investments in the United Kingdom to apply intensive post-investment improvement.
