Awesome list guys! I found this one on Mashable and while it isn't necessarily the 'biggest' social media story of 2009, I thought it was one of the most helpful for startup businesses. http://mashable.c...

Arktan is an innovative startup that takes social media aggregation to the next level. Not only is the website presented in a very simplistic and elegant manner, it is also user friendly (aside from a few bugs here and there). The best part of the entire site is the acceptance of feedback from members of the Arktan community. If there is a bug or a suggestion, the Arktan team works to quickly resolve the issue. Benefits of Arktan for bloggers and social media gurus include: Aggregating content from multiple blogs/microblogs/etc into one website. The incoming feeds can then be sorted into specific channels. These different channels can then be shared with other people both on Arktan, and people that are not yet members. There are also ways to embed your Arktan channels on your website or blog. To put it all pretty simply, people see what you want them to see. No more, no less. Like I said before, it isn't without its' flaws, but for an early startup it is definitely on the right track and a force to be reckoned with. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.
