Madonna leads in Super Bowl Google searches

Madonna drives searches and mobile interactions grows compared to desktop, tablet

 

During the Super Bowl and lot of party goers have questions, such as "How many Super Bowls have The Patriots won?," "When is Madonna on stage?," "What does the MHK on The Patriots' uniforms stand for?," and "Why are the microphones bedazzled?"

And for all of those questions and more, we turn to Google for instant results -- because no one wants to miss a touchdown replay or commercial because they were debating. 

Monday morning, Google released just what people were searching for between plays and where those queries came from. To no one's surprise, the biggest searches were: Madonna, Halftime show, Patriots, Tom Brady and Giants.

But, what was interesting was just how many searches were being conducted and specifically from mobile devices.

 

Since this was the inaugural year of online live streaming for the Super Bowl, Google also reported a record number of queries on where to view the game online. These game viewing searches peaked at kickoff, and were made mostly originating from desktop computers (second was mobile phones and third was tablets.) 

Close to 41% of the searches related to Super Bowl ads were made during the game came from mobile devices. This is just what advertisers had been anticipating and coordinating campaigns around (by adding second-screen complimentary add-ons, Twitter hashtags and video simulcasting online).

It was clear that the online chatter about the big game was going to be record breaking from the quick responses from Twitter stating that the last three minutes of the Super Bowl game on Sunday recieved the highest tweets per second for an English language event, equating to 12,233 each second. The second highest was during Madonna's performance at halftime, with 10,245 tweets per second. With this kind of volume it is easy to see just how much social media is a part of any event that people are watching at the same time.

And even though The Giants were the returning champs for the re-match with The Patriots, Pat's related searches edged out the New York teams' queries.  

But no one could out Google the Material Girl herself, since Madonna took the honor of being the most-searched for term during the game. Other celebrity searches for the evening included the guest performers on stage with Madonna: LMFAO and Nicki Minaj, as well as the former American Idol and singer of the National Anthem: Kelly Clarkson. 

Google: What was that one commercial?

Since many people argue that the game gets in the way of all those pricey commercial, it is obvious that Google saw an onslaught of searches about various buzzed about advertisements -- and since this year many commercials were leaked to gain extra buzz, the searching was even greater. 

Google stated that "Super Bowl ads or ad teasers were watched more than 30 million times on YouTube before the big weekend this year." 

In fact, searches for Super Bowl ads on Sunday were 122 times higher than the same time last week. The most popular commercials in terms of Google searches were advertisements from Acura, GoDaddy and M&M’s. And the highly anticipated comic mashup movie trailer for The Avengers movie trailer also pulled in a lot of searches. 

When were the searches happening during the game

While searching Google during the game was heavy from kickoff to confetti, some searches experienced more spikes at peak points in the game.

Searches for Madonna were spiky and then received a wave of increasing interest the minutes leading up the show then tapered off once she arrived on stage.

The queries about commercials, however seemed extremely consistent throughout the game. And searches including the words "hail mary" were rampant during the fourth quarter when The Giants took the lead and The Patriots had a few opportunities to win the game back.
