As every tech blog seems to be publishing top 10 stories for the end of the year, Twitter has released a list of the top trending topics for 2009.

The list is categorized into seven sections: news events, people, movies, tv shows, technology, sports and hashtags.

In the Twitter blog post, Abdur Chowdhury, Chief Scientist at Twiter said, "Among all the keywords, hashtags, and phrases that proliferated throughout the year, one topic surfaced repeatedly. Twitter users found the Iranian elections the most engaging topic of the year. The terms #iranelection, Iran and Tehran were all in the top-21 of Trending Topics, and #iranelection finished in a close second behind the regular weekly favorite #musicmonday."

It's notable to see how Twitter has grown as a means for spreading news and information about what is going on in the world.  Under the 'People' list, Michael Jackson came up as the number one trending topic.  As we all know, the pop idol passed away earlier this year spreading reactions all across the Internet.

Under the category of 'Technology,' we see Google Wave was a very popular trending topic, I've seen it consistently for the past few months.  But surprisingly, the iPhone isn't anywhere to be found on the list.

Chowdhury closed his blog post sharing the idea that Twitter's Trending Topics serve as, "an interesting time capsule of what was happening as this decade came to a close."
