Part of the team that built the first of its kind digital video software equipped with artificial intelligence that made automatic video editing a reality – the product was awarded the ‘Most Innovative Product/Service’ among more than 300 entries in Singapore’s prestigious National Infocomm Award.
Believing they need to have all the answers all the time.
• Don’t just focus on ‘what’ you’re building, but ‘why’ you’re building it – need to have a sense of purpose otherwise it doesn’t take long before you run out of gas
• Journey is as important as the destination - enjoy the company of fellow travelers and have fun along the way
• Tactically speaking, make sure the product does not get ahead of commercialization and vice versa. I learned this the hard way. My first startup was right out of undergrad. I was part of a terrific team of five engineers and researches and we started a company called Muvee Technologies that offered an automatic video editing software. We nailed the product but in our early days we faced challenges in commercializing the offering. The reason was that we were far ahead in product development and the commercialization efforts didn’t keep pace. In hindsight, we would have been better off, building an MVP, refining it based on early adopters’ feedback and in parallel identifying the scalable commercialization path, before doubling down on the product direction. We did course correction down the line.
Learning this lesson has served me well and at Carrum this is exactly how we are making sure our product development and commercialization activities stay in sync.
