A hub for movies, TV and music content, HitFix has tripled traffic and revenue in the last year

When we think of news and media, we typically think of the large content farms like The Huffington Post and The New York Times. But the Web is vast and smaller media sites for every niche still flourish.

HitFix, an entertainment news and local events hub, announced Friday that it has closed a $2 million investment round led by Golden Seeds with participation from Tech Coast Angels.

Comic-Con 2011. Transformers. Beyonce. True Blood. Harry Potter. Coldplay. These are the most popular topics on HitFix, which covers everything in movies, TV and music. With endless articles to read, videos to watch and photos to peruse, HitFix is definitely a place where many users could happily get their fix for hours.

Besides pure entertainment media and news, HitFix also offers a personalized event calendar, so users can see what events are happening in their area in the next few weeks.

In the last year, CEO Jen Sargent tells me, both traffic (unique visitors) and revenue have tripled. The site, which draws revenue through advertising and syndication content, currently attracts two million monthly unique users.

“Being a two-time investor in the company, I believe that HitFix is poised to dominate the entertainment category by providing consumers with a unique, immersive experience that appeals to the coveted 18-34 year old demographic,” said Yuri Pikover, investor from Tech Coast Angels and board member at HitFix.

Interestingly, HitFix says its traffic is fairly evenly distributed between men and women, which is odd for an industry most often driven by the latter demographic. It could have to do with the wide variety of content available on the site, from celebrity news to music videos to movie trailers and more.

HitFix faces competition from large entertainment news sites like E! Online, The Huffington Post and TMZ.com. The company is partnered with other entertainment websites, including Zap2it, The A.V. Club, Television Without Pity and Rotten Tomatoes.
