Read more...When we last covered CrowdOptic, the company had just raised $1 million in a Series A round. This is truly the next generation of mobile geolocation technology, and now it looks like some other big names are signing on with CrowdOptic. The company has just inked deals with two of the largest sports and live entertainment companies in the world (though no names are being released yet), which will bring CrowdOptic’s technology to a global audience in the very near future.
To recap, CrowdOptic is a real-time tracking app for live events that tags and tracks moving objects in real-time using only the native smartphone environment—meaning the technology involves no software downloads, nor must it be integrated with the organization hosting the event. Simply put: you open the app, point your phone, and get real-time information via little caption boxes on different features of the event you’re attending. For example, if you’re at a baseball game, you can point your phone at the ball to find out information like how fast the ball is going, or what the player’s batting average is. You can then snap a picture and share with your friends, complete with the informative text box.
The most amazing part is the fact that the information isn’t provided by the event organizer—there’s no guy locked away in a tower typing all of the little factoids up and sending them to your phone. The text is fully automated and delivered by CrowdOptic using the company’s own technology.
The partnerships, which will be announced in July, will help springboard CrowdOptic to a global renown as it is the only app that is capable of tracking objects in motion and providing up-to-the-minute updates without any software downloads or integration.
"Augmented Reality providers like Cisco, IBM and SAP offer great functionality based on location and static environments, but no functionality based on moving action such as moving athletes or performers,” CrowdOptic CEO Jon Fisher told me.
Currently, the app is only available to the company’s enterprise partners, who then deploy the app in beta to their own customers for events in a specific location, which could potentially mean that anyone attending an event through LiveNation could tag and track anything on stage as it’s happening. The app will also soon be available in the iPhone App Store.
Previously, CrowdOptic teamed up with Moon Express, a commercial lunar transportation service, to track and provide real-time information on the launch of the lunar lander Airship Eureka.
