In September, mobile entertainment startup mSpot launched an application that lets users stream movie rentals on-demand to their phones for $4.99 a piece. On Tuesday, the company is integrating its mobile streaming service with the PC, making it possible for movie watchers to switch between both devices as they pick up and leave off throughout a movie.
A company rep tells us that Universal, Paramount, Screen Media Ventures and Image Entertainment will be on board with the new service at launch today, and they expect more to sign up before the day's end.
This functionality brings us one step closer to the “three-screen integration” (TV, PC and mobile) that industry pundits love to ponder at industry conferences. “We are no longer tied to a specific location or device when accessing email, internet, music, and now, movies,” mSpot CEO Daren Tsui gushed in a statedment. “Our new service is the first of its kind to fully leverage the latest technology, making the experience of watching a movie easier and more seamless than ever.”
On Wednesday, Blockbuster will make it possible for smartphone users to download movies directly to their phone (provided they have the new T-Mobile HTC HD2). MSpot’s streaming service seems a bit more attractive, since downloading a whole movie to your phone practically triples its weight.
The service will be available at mSpotMovies.com . Below is a list of some of the movies the company says are available today for cross-screen consumption:
