The Crunchies Award is an award of merit, celebrating the achievements of tech startups. Only in its second year, the Awards represent more opportunities to create news than accomplishment and prestige.
But already the ceremony has gained significant traction. About 900 people attended, while 349,137 votes were cast, more than triple the votes submitted last year. Even though It's unclear if those votes are unique, those are impressive numbers.
There were also some high-profile attendees. No, I'm not referring to the costumed monkey who accepted the Best New Device Award for Apple's iPhone 3G. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook also made it to the event to accept the Best Overall Startup Award.
So, what does it mean to win a Crunchie?
"The fact that you won a Crunchie, we hope means something not just to the recipient, but to other people as well," said Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch.
Onno Bakker of eBuddy explained this award would help his international company gain more recognition due to the lack of press coverage of foreign emerging technology companies.
Amazon's Werner Voguls explained the Crunchie would really help to show Amazon's commitment to their customers.
