PayPal and Gilbarco to bring payments to the pump

Gas station checkout solution Gilbarco Veeder-Root has inked a deal with PayPal that will bring digital payments, and other mobile solutions, to the company's gas stations and convenience stores, it was announced Tuesday.

 The PayPal payment capability will initially be launch to retailers with integration with its Passport point-of-sale product, but PayPal will also eventually be integrating with Gilbarco’s other products, including Applause TV, which runs advertisements for users while they pump gas.

"Gilbarco will be making PayPal a payment option at all of their integrated technology solutions, available at gas and convenience store locations, nationwide. This collaboration will enable retailers to connect more effectively with customers, and will simplify the way people pay for gas or pick-up their favorite candy bar at convenience stores," Don Kingsborough, VP of Retail Services at PayPal, wrote in a blogpost Tuesday.

The way that it PayPal in-store payments work is that customers are able to use either a PIN code, or a special PayPal credit card that they swipe, which will automatically deduct the payment directly from the customer's PayPal account.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root offers a range of integrated solutions from the forecourt to the convenience store and head office. For almost 150 years, Gilbarco has earned the trust of its customers by providing long-term partnership, uncompromising support and proven reliability.

The company says that it manages the business and maximize the bottom lines for 19 of the top 20 convenience store operators in the United States.

PayPal partnerships

After partnering with 16 national retailers in May of last year, which allowed customers to pay for their items with their PayPal account in-store, the company set itself a goal of having partnerships with 20 retailers by the end of 2012.

Not only was PayPal was able to meet that goal, it actually passed it, and announced relationships with seven new retailers in January, bring its total to 23.

The seven new retailers include Famous Footwear, Dollar General, Mapco Express, RadioShack, Spartan Stores and two additional partners that PayPal said that it would sharing with the public at a later date.

These retailers joined the other 16 national retailers that PayPal was already partnered with: Abercrombie & Fitch, Advance Auto Parts, Aéropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Barnes & Noble, Foot Locker, Guitar Center, the Home Depot, Jamba Juice, JC Penney, Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Nine West, Office Depot, Rooms To Go, Tiger Direct and Toys “R” Us.

Most recently, PayPal announced that it was working with NCR to integrate PayPal into several of its products, includin the NCR Mobile Pay application and NCR Aloha Online Ordering.
