Vintage Partners leads the fifth round of funding for the project management software service

Clarizen, a project management tool business, announced Tuesday that it raised $12 million for its Series E funding.

The round was led by Vintage Partners, with participation from previous investors Benchmark Capital, Carmel Ventures, DAG Ventures, and Opus Capital.  Clarizen has now raised a total of $49 million.

The company, which delivers project execution software that companies run more efficiently, was founded in 2006 and has been adding more than 100 new customers a month, with revenue up 300% year-over-year in 2011.

Just this April, Clarizen launched an Android app (in addition to its iPhone app) and a new product called Clarizen Anywhere, which lets users to manage their tasks through a browser plugin or as an add-on in Outlook.

And last month, Clarizen announced a new version of its software-as-a-service enterprise platform that gives managers more flexibility over their team.

The new version, 5.4, includes customization and permission capabilities for more granular controls and permissions, including on a project-by-project basis. Now managers can really customize each prohect for their team on the software. On the end-user side, the new version makes it a bit easier to customize which tasks and assignments are viewed.

Currently, Clarizen says it doesn’t plan to raise any more venture money, though that could change depending on its growth needs.

The San Mateo, Calif.-based company also has an office in Israel and hopes that this funding can accelerate its growth in mobile access as well as global expansion.

Clarizen, which pulls its name from the marriage between clarity and zen, has a philosophy of 'robust simplicity.' This translates into products that model and enhance the way an enterprise works, while its 'user-first' design results in rapid adoption and acceptance across the enterprise.

Current customers include NBC Universal, Marketo, Frito Lay, and NASA.

Right now the company is in a similar space as Tenrox, Ascensio System, Digite, LiquidPanner, and Huddle.
