Ustream packs all your live video in one app

As Charlie Sheen introduces more users to the live video streaming service, Ustream updates iOS apps

Just in time for all those Charlie Sheen tornado chasers.
 
Ustream for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch has been updated to let users both stream and broadcast live video from the same app.
 
Supported by devices running iOS 4.1, the new Ustream app has been redesigned for a growing number of iPhone 4 users (to take advantage of those faster processors and the front-facing camera) as well as the soon-to-be legion of iPad 2 users (who will also have a front-facing camera to play around with).
 
The app’s home screen displays in brilliant color some of the more popular upcoming shows, like a research symposium of Hubble and Spitzer Fellows or the premiere of Sheen’s-Korner (explained below). Navigating through other tabs, users can explore more live, upcoming and recent shows, categories or search for something specifically.
 
Always highlighted in the upper right-hand corner, however, is the little camera icon by which the user can instantly start shooting live video or, if the Wi-Fi/3G connection is too weak, record straight to the device.

All in all, it is a powerful build for Ustream and will help the live video startup rise against the competition, like Qik and Justin.tv.

On top of everything, release of the new Ustream iOS app has been perfectly timed to coincide with Charlie Sheen’s latest obsession with social media. Last week, Sheen set a Guinness World Record by accumulating one million Twitter followers in 25 hours and 17 minutes. Today, six days later, @charliesheen boasts 2.1 million followers, around 29,000 for every tweet he’s posted.

Sheen has since expanded from Twitter to Ustream for a new program the actor has dubbed Sheen’s-Korner, in which the media-unfriendly star will fire “torpedoes of truth” at his huge Internet following. His first show, which proved to be an utter bore, still managed to attract over 1.6 million streams.

Ustream will soon be reaching 10 million registered users.
