As the iPhone 5 debut edges closer, Opinionaided asks its users whether they'll upgrade

With so much iPhone news in the last year, has anyone suffered iPhone burnout yet?  Nope.  Last summer saw the introduction of the iPhone 4, followed later by the Verizon iPhone and the prized white iPhone.  It seemed uncertain as to whether Apple would even try to push out an iPhone 5 after so much iPhone hubbub.  But here we are, coming up on the big unveiling in just a couple of weeks.  The question remains, after so many new iPhones debuting this year, will anyone be scrambling to get their mitts on the iPhone 5?  You bet your ass they will.

A survey conducted by Opinionaided, the instant mobile Q&A app, surveyed over 1,000 of its users who are existing iPhone owners to find out if they plan to upgrade to the iPhone 5.  The results: a shocking 49% said yes.

Naturally, it helps to know who’s answering these questions.  The answers came from a random selection of Opinionaided’s users, who skew 60% male, 40% female, with an average age of 24.  So it makes sense that its relatively youngish users are more eager to upgrade.  Opinionaided did not have stats on how many of its users own the iPhone 4 or the Verizon iPhone, or what the average income is among Opinionaided users.

The survey was conducted between September 7-13 by posting the question “Will you upgrade to the iPhone 5?” two to three times per day.

Apple sold 20.34 million iPhones last quarter, representing a 142% increase over last year, and revenue was up $28.57 billion, with a record high net profit of $7.31 billion.

Earlier this month, reports emerged that Foxconn, Apple’s iPhone manufacturer, was producing an estimated 150,000 iPhone 5 units a day.  Digitimes predicts that some 5-6 million units will be shipped by the end of September.

Opinionaided is a mobile Q&A app for iOS that allows users to pose and respond to questions instantly.  To date, the app’s user base has generated some 125 million responses to date and users spend an average of three hours a month on the app.  The company recently raised a combined total of $5.3 million across two rounds of funding and has plans to launch its Android app this fall.
