Silver Peak Systems raises $4.1M, OpenDNS raises $4.5M, Amazon to buy BuyVip?

Silver Peak Systems raised $4.1 million. The company makes developer tools, which are designed to enhance the performance of wide area networks.



OpenDNS raised $4.5 million. Sequoia Capital and Greylock Partners were part of  the round. The company focuses on Internet security products.

 

Rumors are circulating that Amazon may buy BuyVip. The company is currently denying the rumors, but the deal is valued at €80 million, or $110 million.

 

Facebook upgrades photo features. Features will include mass tagging, download links and increased resolution. High resolution photos will cap out with images that are 2048 pixels wide or high.



The Boston Globe is developing a paid site. It will stand next to a free site, at Boston.com. The free site will be dedicated to local news.

Google launches it URL shortener. Found at goo.gl, it will be in direct competition with services like bit.ly. Google claims that the service will be faster and more secure then competitors, in the release.

PlaySpan launched a “monetization as a service” platform. The service will help game makers and site owners to make revenue off of games. One features of note, is the ability to set up an in games, paid item service.

Tonchidot raised $12 million. This is the companies series B funding. Tonchidot, which is based in Japan, received funding from KDDI Corporation, media conglomerate Recruit Co. Ltd., and SPiRE. The company makes augmented reality games.

Two students are charged in the death of a fellow student. The students filmed a student having sex with another man, then posted about it on Twitter and shared the video. The student, who soon after committed suicide, was Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman at Rutgers University.
