Expert Tips for Selecting a POS System

POS systems should be considered a long term investment.  Many companies think that all POS systems are created equally and this just is not the case. Some are more user friendly than others, and since they are customizable, you cannot simply re-sell it or easily return them.  Not all machines offer the same functions, and it is common to buy a machine and then realize it cannot fully meet company needs. Shop around, do research and buy the best machine the first time through. Here is a list of what to consider when buying your POS machine:

First and Foremost is the Software: Not all software works with all hardware. It is for this reason that determining which software your company needs must be the first step. There is no point in buying POS equipment that cannot be used. Sometimes a company will find that their software works with a regular keyboard and consequently, it is not necessary to buy the expensive touch screen.

Industry Standard: Some vendors have a particular specialization such as credit card processing for Ecommerce merchant accounts. A vendor whom has worked in your industry before will be able to correctly answer your questions and deal with problems that may come up in the future. Some industries have very specific POS solutions while others are more flexible. Make sure your vendor understands what is specific to your industry type.

One Vendor: Hiring one vendor ensures that all of the POS equipment is fully compatible. If the products are not fully compatible, then either the system will fail or the system will not be used to its maximum potential.  Buying all of the hardware and software from one vendor prevents this issue.

Do Research: POS systems are expensive, hard to return and will take time to implement. Research all of the available options so that you select a machine that your company will fully benefit from. Things to consider include ease in use and features.

Test Drive: Just as you would test drive a car before you buy it, ask if you can have a demo or free trial of the POS system. Check to see how a basic cash sale works, creating reports, inventory options, refunds, and credit card processing. Using the software in "real life" situations is the only way to see if it will really work with your company's needs.

These tips will help you once you have decided that a POS system is right for your business. It might take some time to research and test out different software options; however all of this upfront work will pay off in the long run. POS systems are expensive and very difficult to return, making sure you select the right POS system for your company the first time around will save you headaches later.
