Management Bio

Richard Rosenblatt has a unique vision for the future of the Internet. A serial entrepreneur, Richard's latest venture is Demand MediaTM, a company he co-founded in May 2006 and serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Demand Media has developed a unique platform that leverages cutting edge, user-driven publishing, community, and monetization tools as it seeks to define the next generation of new media companies.

Richard has built, operated, and sold over $1.3 billion of Internet media companies. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Intermix Media, Inc. (Amex: MIX) and Chairman of Myspace.com. Joining Intermix in March 2004, Richard led a successful turn-around of its existing business, helped the management team grow Myspace.com from an unknown web site to one of the most popular properties on the Internet, developed a number of new Internet media properties, and significantly increased shareholder value. During his eighteen months as CEO of Intermix, its public market capitalization grew from $70 million to over $650 million, when it was acquired by News Corporation (NYSE: NWS) in October, 2005.

Shawn Colo is co-founder and head of M&A. Prior to Demand Media, Shawn spent 10 years in the finance industry, most recently as a Principal with Spectrum Equity Investors, a $4 billion private equity firm focused exclusively on investing in media and communications companies. Along with Richard Rosenblatt, Shawn created the original concept and executed the simultaneous acquisitions of eNom, eHow, and several domain name portfolios to create Demand Media. While at Spectrum, Shawn was involved in several of the firm's most successful investments including Illuminet (NASDAQ: ILUM, acquired by Verisign) and Qeyton Systems, AB (acquired by Cisco) and has served on corporate boards in the US and Europe. Shawn is a graduate of Princeton University, with a degree in Engineering and Operations Research.

my sense tells me it would be better having a vast network of premium vertical domain channels to better integrate content and user experience. what do you think is demands best domain name? my guess is expertvillage.com. this anchor domain must be the beacon for which all the other domains follow. as far as integration for these domains best bet is to point all the other domains to it and have them cross brand from there. somehow demand needs to have a synergy (cross brand marketing) across all there properties. fall in on one and meet the demand network. maybe MIX-monsta can help them put a spin on this. integration is king. http://www.commentlocator.com

Demand Media just bought The Daily Plate. Sounds like a property that can work well with Demand's Livestrong site. That one launches on June 18.

Is there any more money to spread around? Demand bought five-year-old Pluck Corp for a reported $50 million to $75 million. That price tag seems rather high for the typical Demand acquisition. Moreover, the acquisition isn't the typical "content" site that Demand liks to buy. Pluck is a white-label provider of social media tools that allow sites (publishers) to get their audience to engage with one another. Giving users the "tools" to create content and engage with one another has been a quest for Demand CEO and founder Richard Rosenblatt since being chairman of MySpace. No doubt Richard (who is a Vator angel investor) has a grand plan. Demand has been focusing a lot on niche verticals. By acquiring Pluck, not only does Demand have more tool to give to its current properties, it also has a new set of customers thanks to Pluck's client base of medium- to larged-sized publishers.
