- Bildup AI, a company developy a new model of education that blends artificial intelligence with purpose-driven learning, raised a $400,000 angel investment round, backed by a group of undisclosed investors
- BoodleBox, a platform for collaborative AI in higher education, raised a $5 million seed round co-led by Dogwood Ventures and Osage Venture Partners. Additional investors include JFFVentures, ECMC Group, Hivers and Strivers, Service Provider Capital, the UVU Wolverine Fund, and City Light Capital
Going public
- Medline’s stock rose 40% to close at $40.66 in its debut, making it the year’s biggest IPO. The medical supply giant said that it had raised $6.26 billion in its IPO, selling a little over 216 million shares at $29 each, with the stock set to begin trading on Wednesday. Based on a total Class A share count of around 1.3 billion, the company’s market cap stood north of $50 billion

- Brainworks Ventures, an AI-native venture capital fund, launched its initial $50 million fund with a focus on AI applications, infrastructure, and tooling, healthcare and life sciences, enterprise productivity, and education
Policy and government
- The U.S. Department of Education confirmed $208 million in new grant awards for school-based mental health programs, $120 million of which will specifically go to rural school districts. The funds will be distributed across 65 recipients – 33 rural school districts and 32 metropolitan districts – and aim to boost the headcount of credentialed mental health providers, which has decreased since 2021
- The House passed a GOP-backed health care bill that does not include an extension of expiring tax credits that help millions of Americans pay for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The bill faces an unclear future in the Senate, where it would need support from several Democrats to pass. GOP leaders unveiled the bill, known as the Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act, last week. It would expand association health plans, lower premiums for some Affordable Care Act enrollees and enact reforms aimed at decreasing drug costs. But the exclusion of an extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits sparked a revolt by a handful of moderate Republicans earlier in the day — none of whom ultimately voted against the bill. Four GOP members signed a Democratic discharge petition to force a vote on extending the subsidies for three years, teeing up a final vote early in the new year
