Full bio

Erica Warp PhD is a neuroscientist, artist, educator, and entrepreneur. A San Francisco Bay Area native, Erica studied biology at Brown University, received her Masters in neuroscience from King’s College London and her PhD in neuroscience from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research has focused on the development of the nervous system, stem cells and early behavior with a goal to understand how complex nervous systems are formed and how we can use this knowledge to improve our lives and develop treatments and therapies for nervous system disorders and diseases.

Erica co-founded Kizoom, Inc. with Jessica Voytek in 2012 to bring neuroscience to kids using interactive media and relatable characters. She is the creator of Ned the Neuron and currently leads the creative and educational development of Kizoom which helps kids “know and grow” their brains. Her educational work with kids extends to the classroom. She is a teacher and curriculum designer at the hands on science studio Celsius and Beyond in San Francisco where she has developed and led courses for elementary and middle school children on Neuroscience, Dissection, Evolution and Complexity. She has worked as an educator with the California Academy of Sciences, the Bay Area Science Festival, the Girl Scouts and local Bay Area schools.

Erica studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design and Goldsmiths College, and has exhibited in the United States and United Kingdom. She has worked in arts administration in the Sculpture Center Gallery in New York and the Focus Gallery in London and in 2002 co-founded the artist-run gallery space The Surgery in London with six other artists. Her artwork is guided by her work as a scientist and draws inspiration from microscopic forms and neuroscience, and explores ideas surrounding patterns, scale, identity and technology.
