The Brown Berets have always been and always will be Chicano Nationalists. To claim anything other than that is not
holding true to our historical founding principles. The Brown Berets hold no apologies for our political ideology, we
defend it as being the key unifying force behind our movement and as the only solution for the problems our Raza
are plagued with. Chicano Nationalism is far different than the fascism and totalitarianism of the Nazi's and
Communists. Chicano Nationalism is based on us taking pride in our culture and heritage and we stand by the
ancient Mexica prophecies of us retaking our lands and re-establishing our nation of Aztlan.

Does it mean that we become so narrow minded that we ignore the plight of others, and adopt a superiority complex?
NO!! We empathize with the struggle of people’s throughout the world in their quest for freedom but for us our
people and our cause is first because if we don't fight for us no one else will. The Blacks have their cause and agenda;
The Whites have their cause and agenda; we have ours. Why should any Brown Beret fight for a cause that is not our
own? Why should we advance an agenda that is either counter productive or outright subversive and destructive to
ours? Though we should never isolate ourselves from the world around us we must remember the saying "Mi Raza
Primero". Don't change it for "Mi Raza Tambien" or “Mi Raza Algun Dia". If it is not for Chicano Nationalism then
"Mexica Tiahui" means nothing.

Liberation and self determination must always be our guiding principle. Only through Chicano Nationalism will this
goal be fulfilled. Nationalism in its basic sense is merely unity and formation of a nation under the banner of the
commonality of ethnic, cultural, and linguistic ties. We shall also look and examine any book or articles dealing with
the ideology of liberation including "El Plan Espiritual de Aztlan" and many others. Though we are Chicano
Nationalists we do not limit ourselves. We learn from different cultures, political systems, ideologies and
philosophies, and we use what is deemed necessary and convert it to fit Chicano Nationalism and further lead our
people.

Heed the Words of the Veteranos who have more wisdom than the younger generation:

Corky Gonzalez on Nationalism
“Nationalism exists… but until now, it hasn’t been formed into an image people can see. Until now it has been a dream. It
has been my job to create a reality out of a dream, to create an ideology out of the longing. Everybody in the barrios is a
nationalist.. [I]t doesn’t matter if he’s a middle-class, a vendido, a sellout, or what his politics may be. He’ll come back
home, to La Raza, to his heart, if we will build centers of nationalism for him.. Nationalism is the key to our people
liberating themselves … I am a revolutionary … because creating life amid death is a revolutionary act. Just as building
nationalism in an era of imperialism is a life-giving act … We are an awakening people, an emerging nation, a new
breed.”

The term “nationalism” is generally used to describe two phenomena: "(1) the attitude that the members of a nation
have when they care about their national identity and (2) the actions that the members of a nation take when seeking to
achieve (or sustain) self-determination. The first one raises questions about the concept of a nation (or national identity),
which is often defined in terms of common origin, ethnicity, or cultural ties, and while an individual’s membership in a
nation is often regarded as involuntary, it is sometimes regarded as voluntary. The second one raises questions about
whether self-determination must be understood as involving having full statehood with complete authority over domestic
and international affairs, or whether something less is required.

It is traditional, therefore, to distinguish nations from states — whereas a nation often consists of an ethnic or cultural
community, a state is a political entity with a high degree of sovereignty. While many states are nations in some sense,
there are many nations which are not fully sovereign states. As an example, the Native American Iroquois constitutes a
nation but not a state, since they do not possess the requisite political authority over their internal or external affairs. If the
members of the Iroquois nation were to strive to form a sovereign state in the effort to preserve their identity as a people,
they would be exhibiting a state-focused nationalism."

Therefore we must return our movement back to our Chicano Nationalist roots. Our forefathers in the movement
had a vision to bring about revolutionary changes and political, social, economic, educational, and spiritual
empowerment through the use of Chicano Nationalism. When some organizations and people started espousing
ideologies and practices different than that, the movement splintered and the revolution ended. Therefore as Brown
Berets we proudly declare ourselves as Chicano Nationalists! We will NEVER water it down or show disloyalty to the
Chicano movement by substituting it for anything else!

All this land belongs to Natives. By “native” we don’t mean “native
born” whites, blacks, or Asians, we mean the Native People who
inhabited this land for thousands of years before any other human
set foot on this continent or hemisphere.  Chicanos lay a claim to
this land in the indisputable fact that Native blood runs through
our veins.  Our ancestors are Mexica, Maya, Tolteca, Yaqui,
Navajo, Lakota; thousands of Native tribes that were hunted,
destroyed and pushed to the edge of extinction by European
invaders; Spaniards and Portugese in the South, British and French
in the north.  We emerge now as a new breed, a mixture of all
Native Nations and tribes.  Out of many we are One, we are the
Chicano Nation!  With this we claim our Birthright, Aztlan is our
Inheritance!

This Border that was placed here by American invaders was another idea of theirs to hedge us in, to divide and conquer us.
We do not recognize or respect any foreign imposed border.  We do not respect anyone who invades and yet dares to call its
Natives “illegal”.  Aztlan is our homeland, where we belong.  We will reclaim it according to the ancient prophecies, and we
will from henceforth determine our destiny.

The real illegal immigrants on this continent are the white Europeans that crossed an entire ocean, not Mexicans.
Mexicans are descendants of the Mexica and other native tribes. We are not Hispanic, which means we come from Spain;
neither are we Latino, which means we come from Italy. The amount of contamination of European blood on our people is
a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of millions of Natives that inhabited this hemisphere.  The majority of us
are predominantly Native and it is that blood that ties us to and cries out for our land! By them calling us Hispanic or
Latino they try to tear us away from our identity and our land. Therefore we reclaim our identity as Chicanos and reclaim
our nation Aztlan.

Though we live in occupied territory we carry a dual citizenship. One is of the foreign invaders that occupy our lands and
enslave our people. The second is our Citizenship in the Nation of Aztlan, our true nation. Aztlan is a nation that is truly
free, no oppression, no predatory capitalism that enslaves the population. We are a nation that is created by Raza, for all
our Raza. We accept those of other races to dwell with us in peace, to seek happiness and the well being of their families.
We are a nation that values our families, our faith, and our unflinching call to honor and dignity. We believe in the full
restoration of all tribal lands to the Native Nations that dwell within our borders. We believe in freedom, justice, truth and
the Chicano Way of Life. Somos Aztlan!!
