Food and farming will be at the heart of Conservative plans for economic recovery, said Defra Secretary Elizabeth Truss...

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spoke during a National Farmers’ Union (NFU) fringe event at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham. During her speech, Elizabeth Truss stated that farming can make a positive contribution to the general wellbeing of the nation.

The Secretary of State said farming should be seen as a “sunrise, rather than sunset, industry”. She also said farming was “at the centre” of the Conservative conference debate on the economy.

Truss said: “Food and farming is an incredibly important industry, a huge sector, bigger than cars and aerospace put together.

“Often it is not viewed like that in the economy. One if thing I want to do is to get the message across about how vital it is to our wellbeing, to our future and to our food security.

“This Government is absolutely committed to the food and farming industry and understands its vital role in the rural economy.”

She also addressed concerns raised by the President of the NFU Meurig Raymond about the decline of food security in the UK, which has fallen from 80 per cent in the 1980s to around 60 per cent currently.

Truss also said it was important to educate young people about issues such as where food comes from, as well as to communicate that farming can be an attractive career option.

She said: “I want to help put farming role models in the spotlight on the national level so we can see how brilliant this industry is.

“We will be doing further things through the year to promote British farming and say this is a really exciting industry.

“It is not a sunset industry. It is a sunrise industry and you should be getting involved in it.”
