Top 'Surprising' places people use their cell phones

In church, in the shower, while driving and, of course, during sex

I admit it: I love my iPhone. If I don't have it with me, then something just... not right. And whenever I have even a few seconds with nothing to do, I compulsively check it. But I also recognize that there are times when it is completely and totally inappropriate to use it. Like at the movies, or while eating dinner across from another person. (Seriously people, its just common courtesy!)

But the wrath of the smartphone goes beyond anything I could have ever imagined, at least according to a new study out from digital identity company Jumio on Thursday.

Jumio asked 2021 adults living in the United States, of which1102 respondents owned or used a smartphone owners/users, where they used their phones.

Some of the results were typical, if not extremely annoying and potentially dangerous. For example, 35% said they used their phone in a movie theater, and 33% said they used it on a dinner date. And the astounding 55% who say they use their smartphone while driving. Keep in mind, those are only the ones who are dumb enough to admit to it!

Like I said, irritating, and likely homicidal, but not unexpected.

But then there were the responses that I can't imagine anyone expected. Like the 19% who use their smartphone in their church, or other place of worship. (Uh... you do realize that God is all-seeing and all-knowing, right? He's like Santa Claus, only less forgiving.)

There is also the 12% who use their smartphone in the shower, also known as the group that does not seem to realize that an iPhone is not water-proof.

And, the best of all, are the 9% who say that they use their smartphone during sex, a number that rises to 20% among those aged 18 – 34.

While my first reaction to this number was probably the same as yours (a mix of amused and horrified) I have to say that, in all honesty, I'm kind of in awe.

Wait, hear me out! Think about it: how are these people getting away with it? Where do you hide it if you get caught? It must take some incredible skill to not have the other person notice and that is, in at least some twisted way, impressive.

The study also found out some interesting information regarding how smartphones affect relationships.

12% of those who responded that are in a relationship said that they believe their smart phone gets in the way of that relationship. But single people also seemed more afraid of having their privacy invaded than married people, with 69% of singles putting a password on their phone, compared to 55% of married people.

In this case, though, I think the single people have it right, as 29% of those who responded said that they have snooped on someone else's phone. And, once again, we are only counting those who would admit to doing this.

Oh, people. Sometimes you astound me.
