Reliving the Excitement of the 2011 FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals

A few weekends ago, NHRA hosted the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway, in Sonoma, California, and boy, let me tell you – the hot rods, dragsters, and fun never stopped. There were some really nice rides at the track. So many, in fact, that my head was bouncing back and forth from one side to the next looking at all the beautiful cars and motorcycles.

Among all the excitement of the qualifying runs and eliminations were the great people who make NHRA events so fan-friendly. While walking around, you see everything that goes into making this show a success.

First, there is the Nitro Mall, where you can find anything your heart desires in the way of clothing and other NHRA souvenirs. Then there is the food … oh my gosh, the food! The event had some of the best fair food you could ever have had at the races. Sure, there are places you can go to get a plate of food that takes both hands to hold, but nothing compares to the stellar burritos available at Infineon. Just imagine the best, most ultimate “man-size” beef burrito loaded with cheese, onions, and all the fixings, served with a large serving of refried beans and rice. Wash it all down with an ice cold 32 ounce beer that quenches your thirst just the right way. I am here to tell you that if you like to eat and you like racing, the drag races are the place to be!

The track also had some special displays for spectators to visit. There was the US Army display, where you could sit in an official helicopter simulator and try your hand at flying for the US Army. Then there was a Harley dealership that had some of the nicest bikes in the world on display. They also had a cigar shop on wheels parked in a shady spot, complete with pleasantly fresh cigars attendees could enjoy.

At the end of the weekend, four drivers took home Wally trophies for winning their respective classes. Fans cheered while the drivers tried to stay dry as the champagne cork popped and the bottles were sprayed. Obviously, when you make it all the way to the end by winning one round after the other and the officials hand you the trophy on stage in front of your fans and friends, it is hard not to break out in a huge smile while raising that trophy over your head.

After the awards and celebration, spectators gathered up their souvenirs, jackets and hats, picked up tired but happy kids, and made the trip home.  It was a great weekend that no one will ever forget – not even next year, when everyone makes the trek back for another three days of Nitro burning, tire smoking, crowd screaming fun at Infineon for the NHRA drag races.
