Founded in 2018, Luna matches patients with a physical therapist, who then delivers therapy in-person, either at their home or work. In between sessions, the therapist can also prescribe in-app exercises and answer any questions the patient might have in the Luna app.
Going forward, Providence patients will have access to outpatient physical therapy service through the Luna platform, and Luna's network of local physical therapists will provide care from the comfort of a patient's home. The same therapist will treat the patient for the entirety of the treatment plan; between visits, patients can use Luna to communicate with their physical therapists, set appointment times, and perform therapist prescribed and monitored exercises.
Luna currently operates across 48 markets in 27 states and has treated over 35,000 patients in their homes, while Providence employs 120,000 caregivers, who serve in 52 hospitals and 1,085 across Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington.
Prasanna Mohanty, Chief Operating Officer for the clinical network at Providence, spoke to VatorNews about the partnership, why the two companies are a good fit, and how it will benefit Providence's patients
VatorNews: Why is Luna a good partner for Providence? What values do you share?
Prasanna Mohanty: Providence entered into a partnership with Luna to provide an additional outpatient care delivery option for patients. This partnership will extend Providence’s reach and coverage, allowing more patients to start and complete their physical therapy regimen within the Providence system while ensuring quality and continuity of care. Additionally, Luna and Providence both share values of justice, fostering a culture that promotes unity and reconciliation.
VN: What does Luna provide for you that you didn't have before? What gap do they fill for you?
PM: Providence teamed up with Luna to further expand access to outpatient physical therapy services. By partnering with Luna, Providence can offer in-home PT, reduce friction points for patients and ensure continuity of care within the health system.
VN: What will this change for your patients? How will they benefit?
PM: Our partnership with Luna will provide an alternative option for outpatient physical therapy services where access is limited, especially for patients who may have transportation challenges, have been placed on a waitlist, have dropped out of in-person care, or simply prefer care in their home.
The Luna technology platform will match eligible Providence patients to therapists based on several factors, including specialty, geography, and schedules. Luna’s network of local physical therapists will provide consistent, high-quality care, of the type administered in a traditional outpatient clinic, but from the comfort of a patient’s home.
VN: What kind of ROI are you hoping to see for both patients and therapists?
PM: We are hoping to see patient satisfaction scores improve, and a smoother continuum of care within the system for patients seeking at-home physical therapy.
VN: What will you consider to be success in regards to this partnership?
PM: A smooth continuity of care in which Providence patients’ treatment plans are completed at a convenient place and time while meeting Providence’s quality standards.
VN: Is there anything else I should know?
PM: Providence is an innovative health system that is continuously finding ways to meet patients where they are. We recognize that there is a growing number of physical therapy outpatients needing or wanting to remain at home, and Luna’s in-home model will enable our teams to accommodate patient needs and ensure quality care that is safe and convenient.
