Function Health is a platform that provides patients with access to over 160 lab tests at a single cost of $499 per year. These tests helps people at every life stage understand their current health, discover how it’s changing, and take immediate action.

Now the company is expanding into a new area: imaging. And to do so it announced on Monday the acquisition of Ezra, a direct-to-consumer cancer screening platform that uses a combination of MRI screenings and artificial intelligence to do more accurate cancer screenings.

In conjunction, Function also announced the launch of what it says is the first FDA-cleared, AI-powered Full Body MRI scan that takes just 22 minutes instead of 60, and costs $499 instead of over $1,500.

“Adding imaging has been part of our vision from day one. When we realized that it was possible to cut full-body MRI scan time from 60 to 22 minutes and slash the price from $1,500 to $499, I knew that together with Ezra we dramatically improve how people take control of their health,” Jonathan Swerdlin, co-founder and CEO of Function, told VatorNews.

“Ezra’s FDA-cleared AI was the missing piece that democratizes seeing inside their body—so bringing Ezra into Function completes the picture. It’s time everyone owns their health, every year. This is the best use of AI—applying it directly to human life.”

Launched in beta in 2023, Function is for people over the age of 18 with all backgrounds and health profiles. A membership includes over 160 lab tests at the start of each year, including those for heart, thyroid, hormones, metabolic, cancer signals, inflammation, kidneys, liver, nutrients, and heavy metal toxicity. Its over 200,000 members also get over 60 follow-up tests at three to six months to track changes as well as insights from top doctors based on their results, a written clinician summary to help them understand their data, access to re-test at transparent prices when needed, the option to purchase additional tests, including Lyme, STDs, and allergies, and access to tests like the Galleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection test.

Ezra, meanwhile, uses medical imaging and AI to monitor for possible cancer and over 500 conditions in up to 13 organs. The company offers multiple types of full body scans ranging from $950 to $2,500.

Patient can use Ezra to schedule appointments with a RadNet imaging facility; when they arrive, they are greeted by a member of the Ezra staff at the facility who then guides them through the process. The member gets their scan done and then the results are made available within their Ezra interface. They can also use the platform to schedule a call or a meeting to speak to the Ezra physician to be taken through the results. The company partners with existing outpatient imaging facilities and all Ezra scans are analyzed by board-certified radiologists.

“Lab tests show your biology; imaging shows your anatomy. Together they give a 360° view of your health, tracked over time. Until now, preventive imaging was inaccessible—reserved for the select few. With Ezra as a part of Function, every member can book a 22-minute Full Body MRI for $499, helping detect cancer and other silent threats before symptoms appear. Annual labs plus annual scan is the new standard of care,” said Swerdlin.

Going forward, Ezra will live on within Function’s platform, with the entire team coming over, including founder Emi Gal.

“At Function, I will continue to head our initiatives in imaging technology and work on integrating Ezra’s technology into Function’s broader service offerings. Ezra will remain a subsidiary of Function, and I’ll still be CEO of Ezra. My role will focus on further developing our AI technologies to ensure that our full-body scan offerings remain at the forefront of accessibility and innovation,” Gal explained.

What made the two companies a good fit is that they share a vision of making advanced, proactive health monitoring accessible to everyone, he said.

“Function has revolutionized comprehensive lab testing, making it affordable and widely available. Similarly, Ezra has pioneered the use of AI to make full-body MRI scans much faster and cost-effective to detect cancer early for everyone,” said Gal.

“By joining forces, we are now able to combine strengths and offer a unified platform that provides a 360-degree view of health that leverages both lab data and MRI imaging. This comprehensive approach to health assessments is a groundbreaking step into a new era of health and wellness, making it possible to take control of your health.”

Now that Ezra is part of Function it will be add scans at nearly 100 locations, with the expectation of soon expanding to over 1,000, in addition to Function’s all-in-one personal health platform, which already offering lab testing at 2,200 Quest Diagnostics locations.

“Forty percent of premature deaths are preventable, yet our bodies remain a black box. Blood work alone can’t visualize tumors, arterial plaque, early liver disease, or subtle brain changes. Scans change everything—what was once a luxury is now essential. Imaging and labs together let members finally see—and own—their health,” Swerdlin explained.

Gal, meanwhile, sees the acquisition is “an incredible validation of our mission and the years of dedication our team has put into making early cancer detection possible for everyone.”

“It’s a deeply personal and important mission for me, and over the past six years our team has helped countless people find cancer before it was too late. Now, with our combined forces, we are scaling our imaging technology alongside Function’s robust lab testing framework and making comprehensive health checks possible for millions,” he said.

We are incredibly excited about what the future holds for Function and Ezra. With Function’s massive footprint and Ezra’s technology, we are redefining the standards of care to make preventive health monitoring an integral part of everyone’s life. This isn’t just about detecting health issues; it’s about preventing them and empowering people to take control of their health in ways that were not possible before.”
