Company description

THE PROBLEM

(1) It’s easy for young people to capture a video using mobile but it’s quite difficult to create an amazing and fun video; (2) Life moment has its amazing motion and sound behind; (3) Photo without contextual information can be viewed differently for different people; (4) Time is limited and a message has its meaningfulness in only a period of time.

Therefore, we believe that: People really need a new mobile video app, that helps people feel confident enough to capture and send video messages daily to friends, which are only available in only a period of time.

THE SOLUTION

Umbala lets people capture and send 12 seconds magical Bala videos, which are available in 12 hours to respond before self-destructing. Besides, Umbala lets people share and connect to like-minded people based on common tags of interests in 12 days.

Techniques to create magical Bala videos: (1) Capturing motion effects such as Slow, Fast, Blur, Light Trail, Reverse, & Loop to make amazing and fun video; (2) Capturing photos while recording voice, which are sent along with voice message to deliver more contextual information to the others; (3) Mixing recorded voice with free music to make it more fun.

THE OPPORTUNITY

US Digital video ads revenue: $5.96B (2014), $7.77B (2015), $9.59B (2016), $11.25B (2017), $12.82 (2018) (Source: eMarketer.com, Dec 2014); Asia Pacific: $4B (2014), Southeast Asia: $400M - $600M (2014) (Source: Nielsen 2014).

In Asia Pacific market, there’s 943M active social media users using mobile. The penetration of mobile social is 24.3% of the total population. Xiaomi are selling mass android smartphones in India & China with price under $100, it’s mean that in the next 2 - 3 years, most people will have android phones and be online on smartphone. This make a big opportunity and challenge for Umbala aims to be a big candidate for mobile digital video ads in Asia and the world.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

Currently photo sharing, photo message (like Instagram) apps provide a lot of information. However, without contextual information, sometimes it’s hard for people to completely convey their ideas by just using photos. Usually they use text to provide additional contextual information, but with voice, Umbala can make it even better.

Like Snapchat, private messages on Umbala will be disappeared to protect personal privacy, but it does not encourage people (esp. Asian) to keep conversation going. Therefore, in Umbala, the last message will be saved in their inboxes until someone replies, so it will solve that problem.

And Vine video app is ready for the most creative people but it’s really hard for almost people to create interesting Vine videos. Umbala helps people create amazing and fun videos easily by using simple motion effects. Besides, Umbala supports hashtags inside video frames, and let people share in common tags of interests that can help their videos are easily to be discovered and the message will be self-destructing after a limited time, that can encourage people to capture and send more video messages to friends.
