With our premier healthtech event just around the corner, we thought it would be worth taking a look at some of latest healthtech startups receiving large Seed and Series A rounds in the last year. Using data from Pitchbook, my aim was to identify the eight startups that raised the biggest Series A rounds in 2016 as well as the eight startups that raised the biggest seed rounds in 2016.

First, the big picture.

In 2016, healthtech startups raised $2.6 billion, down 2.8 percent from 2015, when companies raised a total of $2.7 billion. This graph illustrates the huge jump in dollars healthtech experienced over the past few years, with only a small decrease occurring last year:

As far as number of deals, the data looks fairly similar. In 2016, healthtech startups closed a total of 362 deals, down 7.4 percent from the 391 deals closed in 2015. Still, last year's figures top fundraising rounds from years prior to 2015:

Today, healthtech is a monster encompassing a wide swath of technologies from software solutions to physical devices for patients to bioengineered pharmaceuticals. For the purposes of this piece, I've focused on healthtech as opposed to life sciences. This is how Pitchbook defines the two categories:

  • Healthtech: Companies that provide mobility and other information technologies to improve healthcare delivery while decreasing costs. It entails the use of technology and services – including cloud computing, internet services and social mobility – to optimize patient-centric healthcare.
  • Life Sciences: Companies involved in sciences dealing with living organisms and life processes, including biology, pharmaceuticals, biomedical technology and nutraceuticals.

Without further ado, here are the 16 early-stage healthtech startups you need to know about.
