TVGuide updates its iOS app for richer TV experience
Using its original content, name recognition, TVGuide has an advantage in the second screen space
A lot of companies have been struggling to enhance the TV viewing experience with various second screen apps that allow users to check-in, see extra content and share conversations with other viewers -- but now a name we all know is getting in on the game: TV Guide.
The TV Guide iOS app, released Thursday, allows to search for shows, connect with friends, and discover new content. This app, in part is a response to the increased likelihood and changing habit to reach for your phone for updated TV content information and to re-engage those that are surfing online during commercial breaks.
The new app also includes the ability to save video searches based on a specific program or actor, sharing comments about a program via Facebook or Twitter, and make celebrity Watchlists. The Watchlists are actually lists, created by a notable person to help viewers discover must-see shows.
Also, TVGuide has a lot of its own exclusive interviews and content that it will put on the app to further engage users.
So, you found a must-see show, now what? Well, the TVGuide app also makes it easier to find video content on other streaming services that have their own iPad apps, like ABC, ABC Family, CW, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, MAX GO, Crackle and iTunes.
There is also a fun feature called "Tonight Trending," that lists off hot shows based on what TV Guide users are watching.
Obiously, this app is a great value add to TV viewers but it also is helping advertisers because brands can pay for video showcases, branded content, and even sponsorships for its “Add to Watchlist” button.
Competing in a similar space as startups like Zeebox, GetGlue, and Comcast, it will be interesting to see just how much leveraging material TVGuide has in this app-savvy space.
The app is coming Android and other platforms soon and earlier versions of the app are used by 7 million active monthly users.
