Pinterest mobilizes with apps for Android and iPad
The sharing company also revamps its iPhone app
Little more than a week after officially openings its gilded gates to all Web users, Pinterest is now making the mobile pinning experience available to all with new Android and iPad apps. The company announced the new apps late Tuesday, and they’re available now in the App Store and Google Play.
“Android owners have been very vocal with their requests for an app – every product announcement we’ve recently made has resulted in the question, ‘What about an Android app?’” the company said via blog post. The company said it has custom-designed the Android app to work with any Android device—phone or tablet—regardless of screen size, cost, or speed. That includes Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
The iPad app is a little closer to the actual desktop or laptop experience, with a nice expansive layout that lets you see lots of pins all at once.
In addition to the new Android and iPad apps, Pinterest also revamped its iPhone app, which left much to be desired. The new iPhone app comes with a new two-column layout that allows for quicker and easier browsing.
Last week, Pinterest announced that it now has the “capacity to offer Pinterest to more users.” The announcement followed news from Shareaholic that Pinterest is now the fourth largest traffic referral source in its network of over 200,000 websites. Referral traffic from Pinterest increased nearly 16% in July so that it now accounts for 1.38% of all referral traffic. That’s actually a slow-down from its May to June increase of 43.7%, leading many to wonder if the novelty is starting to wear off. But regardless of whether or not the hype is fizzling out, Pinterest is still outpacing Twitter, Bing, and StumbleUpon when it comes to referral traffic.
The site reached 10.4 million registered users in February, according to AppData, which also found that nearly 98% of Pinterest’s users are female. And in April, a report from Experian Hitwise revealed that Pinterest has now emerged as the third largest social media site in terms of monthly visits.
ComScore reported in June that Pinterest is now the fastest growing social network with 4377% growth between May 2011 and May 2012. Interestingly, comScore also determined that Pinterest users tend to buy more and conduct more online transactions than other social media users.
Launched in 2009, Pinterest has raised $138 million from Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, and FirstMark Capital, as well as angels like Ron Conway, Kevin Hartz, Max Levchin, and Jack Abraham, among others.
