Amazing Alex is proving that Rovio has more in its corner than ornery animals

The gaming brand that brought the runaway franchise Angry Birds to the masses may not have to worry that it will experience the sophomore slump since, in its first day full day on the charts it has already soared to the No. 1 paid app in gaming.

After its Thursday release, the new puzzle game "Amazing Alex" has toped the Apple Store charts with its 99-cent iPhone version (ranking as the best-selling app in 35 countries), and the $2.99 iPad version (which is at the top of the charts in 50 countries).

And not to be ignored outside of the iOS bubble, Amazing Alex is currently ranked as the best-selling app in the Google Play store.

The Finnish company already saw its Angry Birds' franchise surpass the billion download mark and it looks like it isn't going to be a one-trick gaming pony.

The question, however, remains if the game will continue to procure downloads and buzz after the release excitement and the iTunes promotions wean off in coming weeks and months - -that will be a true test of Rovio's success with its newest game.

If Amazing Alex takes off at half of the speed and with a fraction of the world-wide recognition that Angry Birds has then Rovio could continue to propel entire franchise markets around the new universe of characters and environments.

Angry Birds has been widely recognized as a hit that successfully crossed over from the mobile app world to real world merchandising. If Rovio continues at this pace, it will maintain as the example of how to create a mobile game with endless monetizing opportunities.

About the game Amazing Alex

Amazing Alex, previously Casey's Contraptions before Rovio acquired the rights to the game, follows a border character with an active imagination and excitement for puzzles.

At the start of each level, users are given an objective, and various tools and options on how to complete it by moving the mobile device.

The game is divided into four stages with 32 levels within each. As user progress through the levels, new tools and mechanics are introduced to keep the game interesting and more varied. This is a signature element for Rovio, which introduced the world to wordless tutorials for the various bird capacities.

Users have reviewed this game as almost equally polished to the Angry Birds games -- giving users a lot of value for the few dollars they spend on the casual game.

Now if only I could complete the summer edition of Angry Birds' Seasons before I start into this new puzzle universe.
