For those craving ice cream sandwich-based smartphone, release date is Nov. 17

Even though this October all of our “mobile” attention has been focused on Apple and news surrounding the iPhone 4S, Samsung has some pretty exciting news of its own. Samsung's Galaxy Nexus' release date is now official.

The much anticipated new Galaxy smartphone will available in the UK on November 17th, and in the rest of Europe in the following weeks. The leak was first notice on Amazon.UK , and then confirmed @SamFirmware, the SamMobile.com's official Twitter account . The Samsung smartphone announcement was initially delayed due to Steve Job’s death.

The phone operates on Android 4.0, and has been code named Ice Cream Sandwich. It's reported to include many improvements over the previous versions of Android, such as the nifty Face Unlock, which allows device unlock using only face recognition, better people integration to social networks, and a built-in ability to take screenshots.

The phone has been priced at a staggering £549.99 or $886, however, it  will also be available at a lower cost on a two-year contract in UK on Vodafone, 02 and 3UK.

But for the rest of us, in the U.S., a little patience is required.

A release date for the Galaxy Nexus in the US has yet to be announced, but speculation across Twitter is growing by the minute that it will be released just in time to fill our Christmas stockings.

Based on official Verizon and T-Mobile's twitter accounts, the GalaxyNexus will be made available on both networks.
