Most entrepreneurs are confident risk-takers who are good at using their instincts and experience to figure things out on their own. But sometimes, the best answer is simply: "I don't know."
Don't be afraid of using the phrase liberally when you are building your business. It is always better to admit your don't know something than to try to bluff your way through. Thankfully, today there are myriad resources where new small business owners can get the answers they need to succeed.
Asking for advice from seasoned experts isn't a sign of weakness. It is smart business. Take advantage of the opportunity to listen and learn as much as you can. That doesn't mean you have to follow instructions or do it by the book, but at least you'll have the benefit of advice from someone who has already been there before to help guide you in your decision-making process.
When you admit you don't have all the answers, a world of possibilities opens up to you. So take advantage of online resources, seminars, organizations, books and personal mentors. Accumulate as much information as you can, but make the decision that's right for you.
As a small business owner, you don't have unlimited resources. Asking for help and getting the advice you need can minimize mistakes and help you get on track faster. So when you confront a new issue or challenge embrace these words: I don't know. Then find the help you need to succeed.
