10gen gets $20 million Series D led by Sequoia
Flybridge Capital and Union Square Ventures return to back this MongoDB support startup
10gen, provider of support and training for all things MongoDB, announced Monday that it has secured $20 million in financing led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from existing investors Flybridge Capital and Union Square Ventures.
This is the company’s fourth round of funding, bringing the total capital raised to $31.4 million.
MongoDB is an open source, document-oriented database written in the C++ programming language. What 10gen does is offers developers using MongoDB support to assist them in all their MongoDB endeavors.
Offered services include expert advice, application development consulting, training with MongoDB’s creators, OEM support and commercial licenses. Having access to all these support tools could make a huge difference in speed and efficiency of app deployment.
High-profile customers of 10gen include Craigslist, Disney, foursquare, Intuit, MTV Networks and Shutterfly, though there are hundreds of companies that use MongoDB.
“MongoDB is a practical database for overcoming practical problems that engineers in the real world face,” said Harry Heymann, lead server engineer at foursquare, at MongoNYC 2011. “MongoDB is designed by people who built large-scale web apps, and they want to build the perfect database for the web apps that they were building and solve practical problems that their customers actually have.”
Heymann made the above statement at MongoNYC 2011, one of many Mongo-DB-centric conferences. The next one coming up, MongoUK 2011, is to be hosted in London on September 19th.
The new funding will be used to accelerate 10gen’s expansion across multifarious sectors through the expansion of research and development in Europe and Asia and the addition of new offices in Ireland and the UK. Also, as plainly advertised on the company’s homepage, expect a host of new job offerings. Currently, there are over 20 open positions available in Redwood Shores, Calif., New York, N.Y., London and Dublin.
