500 Startups unveils the summer 2011 startups
Designed as solutions for distribution: Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, Android, and Apple iOS
The fast and furious 500 Startups announced Thursday the new batch of startups for its summer 2011 session, which started in May and concludes with a Demo Day on August 15.
In total, there are 20 new startups, almost as much as the number of spring session 500 Startups Accelerator and Seed companies combined, which came out to 22. That was the inaugural class, so the summer startups are only the second batch to be incubated by 500 Startups.
The full list of startups and their descriptions can be found below. Notably, 500 Startups says they are 30 percent international and 20 percent women, making the batch perhaps a bit more diverse than most.
In addition to unveiling the new companies, 500 Startups also announced that Christine Tsai has been promoted to partner and Paul Singh has been added as principal.
The incubator also awarded the d.fund (designer fund) to StoryTree and Culture Kitchen and the Twilio fund (for VoIP) to Volta.
Besides just incubating, 500 Startups and its founder Dave McClure have been busy funding other startups, including video encoding/transcoding provider Zencoder, local Q&A site Hipster and voice response/analysis Saas Saygent.
