Push coming to Facebook for iPhone
Facebook 3.1 update for Apple iPhone will finally support push notifications
Back in late August, Facebook and iPhone users rejoiced to the news of the launch of Facebook's newest iteration of its iPhone app, specifically updated for the smartphone's new OS 3.0. The app came tricked out with so many nifty features and utilities that one could easily replace most actual desktop usage of Facebook with mobile usage through the app.The ability to see a constantly-refreshing news feed and like and comment on friend updates, however, is now old news.
Expectant Facebook iPhone users are looking towards the future now to the app's next major update, 3.1, which will come packaged with one of the most wanted features for the app: push notifications.
Apologizing for a lack of updates, lead Facebook developer for the iPhone app Joe Hewitt tweeted the following message just a few hours ago:
Facebook iPhone update: 3.03 with bug fixes coming soon, and 3.1 with push notifications to follow.
Now we'll never have to go any time at all without reading our latest Facebook messages, wall post, and other shared items from friends.
Not exactly sure why the bug fixes can't simply be included in the 3.1 update, we would probably be right to guess that the major update is still too far away to warrant letting whatever bugs remain in the current app. That said, we likely have at least a week, but probably more, until we see Faceboook 3.1 in the App Store.
Unfortunately, there has not been any recent confirmation on other possible features that Hewitt suggested previously that might make it into 3.1, like contact list synchronization between Facebook friends and the iPhone address book as well as site-wide search.
