Belgian cloud computing company Nomadesk announced Friday morning that it has raised $7 million (or €5 million) in a Series B round led by new investor BAMS Angel Fund, with help from existing shareholder Gimv. This round brings Nomadesk’s total funding to €8 million, which translates to almost $12 million.
Formerly known as Aventiv, Nomadesk offers seamless cloud-based data sharing, synchronization, and storage software that lets users upload and send large files and folders containing pictures, videos, or documents through the FileLink or FolderLink. Additionally, users can upload and publish documents to a blog or website with the widget feature. For $15 a month per Team Fileserver, an unlimited number of people can share and collaborate on files.
“Overall, we see the need for new types of value added SaaS increasing due to workforce mobility, virtual offices, synchronization of multiple devices, data loss protection, etc.,” said Filip Tack, founder and CEO of Nomadesk, in the company’s press release. “Analysts, such as Sean Ryan from IDC’s Mobile Enterprise group, expect the global mobile worker population to grow beyond 1.19B in 2013, which is nearly 35% of the worldwide workforce. We have the service, team and funding to adequately respond to the need of these ‘nomadic’ workers.” Oh…I get it… “nomad desk.”
Founded in 2004, Nomadesk has made a number of strategic partnerships with Belgian operators Telenet and Hostbasket, U.S.-based Novatel Wireless, and Canada’s Bell. This latest round of funds will be used to fuel Nomadesk’s expansion throughout North America. “Exiting times ahead!” the company’s blog read, but I think that may have been a typo.
In 2009, the company was selected by the Guidewire Group as “the most promising European startup” in Innovate! 2009, and the company also made the list of the Red Herring Europe TOP 100.
Earlier this year, Nomadesk launched its True Sharing and Collaboration iPhone app, which lets users access shared files and folders from their iPhone.
Additionally, the company also announced its board of directors, which includes Yves Michali (formerly of Novell, Microsoft, Mobiclick, and Groove Network), Yvan Morel de Westgaver (formerly an executive at EDS), and Bart Luyten, general partner at BAMS Angel Fund.
“We are convinced that Nomadesk has built the team and product to tap into the growing cloud storage and collaboration market,” said Luyten in a prepared statement. “What’s more, the company has a strong pipeline of partners that can accelerate the company’s growth. As a technology fund we want to be front and center while this software-as-a-service market takes shape.”
