Surane Weerasinghe

Like so many of us, I was an animal lover growing up, and the wonders of Earth's biodiversity continue to amaze me everyday. As I got older, I learned more about the plight of billions of animals around the world, and soon realized how badly they needed strong voices to come to their defense. I saw journalism as a potential megaphone for activists, and wanted to help get important stories about animals and wildlife out in the open. My beginnings as a television news reporter in Northern Ontario, Canada have led me to specialize in multimedia content and documentary film in the United States. A recent M.S. graduate of the Columbia Journalism School in 2014, I received class honors in Multimedia Storytelling. Along the path, I discovered the true power potential of media today. My goal every morning is to figure out new digital strategies for showcasing animals, humans, and nature, to help us better understand our planet, and each other. Through curiosity, laughter, and open hearts, we can do so much to make this world a better place. Thanks for taking an interest, Surane
