Full bio

Maria is the SVP and global head of strategy and business development, and works on corporate development and venture investments for Reuters Media. She is in charge of redefining and growing Reuters' consumer facing websites as well as its global business syndicating photos, video, and text news to broadcasters, newspapers, online sites, corporates, and advertisers.  Maria is currently spending much of her time growing market share in emerging markets such as China, India, Russia and the Persian Gulf.

Prior to joining Reuters, Maria was the General Manager of MarketWatch.com and Barron's Online, both subsidiaries of Dow Jones.  She was responsible for driving business strategy, product development and innovation, design, operations and general management. Maria built and executed an innovative product plan around Dow Jones' Four Cornerstones: Community, Search, Editorial and Tools. Some of the products launched included a redesigned home page and editorial page, several blogging platforms, streaming quotes to the sites, search across the sites, and the Virtual Stock Exchange, an online fantasy stock market game.

Maria has also spent a lot of time on audience development, which is key to continue to driving new users to the web sites. These initiatives include business development relationships with the major portals and smaller niche sites, communication with the major blogging sites, search engine optimization and search engine marketing efforts.

Maria also has worked closely with sales teams to grow revenue and expand the advertising base, and worked with the team at Wall Street Journal Asia and Wall Street Journal Europe to work on Marketwatch's and Barron's Online international expansion.

Prior to Dow Jones, Maria was the Director of Business Development and Strategy at Yahoo!, in business development for Disney Internet Group, and in the mergers and acquisition group at Volpe Brown Whelan, where she focused on the Internet industry.

Maria holds a BA from Northwestern University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
