GELAREH ALAM Redefining the Art of Fashion
San Francisco based conceptual designer GELAREH ALAM is pushing beyond the conventional confines of fashion with an eponymous line conceived from the unbridled imagination of pure art. Her remarkable pieces seem simultaneously impenetrable and gracefully fragile, imbued with echoes of the past with a view of the future. The collision of incongruous elements and mixed media at play against the backdrop of unexpected silhouettes openly defy fleeting seasonal trends while delivering an undeniable testament to modern allure. Motivated by the freedom and cultural vitality of the city by the Bay and driven by a need to create, Gelareh discovered her métier by using fashion as the medium for her art. She took various courses, consequently earning a degree in fashion design.
Her affinity to art impels her to create fashions by hand, each piece manifesting the visceral link between her abstract designs and tangible reality. In the malleability of fabric, leather and metal details, she explores themes of female empowerment, the fluid shapes of nature, classical forms of architecture, and dystopian visions. Following several limited edition collections, she officially launched her own label in 2015, drawing critical raves and a growing, devoted following. The increasing demand for Gelareh Designs prompted her to add a range of accessories, footwear and men’s wear as well as expand production capabilities by enlisting a team of already well trained tailors to execute her designs. With ever more exciting collections, Gelareh continues to flourish at the forefront of fashion’sevolution.
“You see in my collections a celebration of freedom, a release from judgments, testaments of truth, or reflections of nature’s evolution. I often depict liberation from the ordinary and the shackles of convention. I’ve also explored glimpses of the future as filtered through the past. These are the concepts that interest me and inform my work and become the paint I use on the canvas of fashion.” _ Gelareh Alam
