Prior to directing, Alan had managed to become the UK’s youngest ever ‘in house’ film editor, at Caroline Films in London. There he cut commercials and documentaries, even doing a stint on Nicholas Roeg’s legendary swinging 60‘s movie, ‘Performance‘, starring Mick Jagger.

Subsequently he was snapped up by Roger Cherrill, the city’s largest post production facility, where he was to cut for many of the best commercial directors of the day, including, Alan Parker and Adrian Lyne.

Alan eventually joined Lyne’s production company Jennie & Co, as their Editor, but soon started directing TV ads himself and was made an equal partner in the company, where he took an active role in both the day to day management and longer term shaping of the outfit whilst also growing his career as a director.

Jennie & Co went on to become one of the great production houses of the next two decades, being the first company to twice win the coveted Palm D’Or at Cannes and the first British production company to successfully go ‘Trans Atlantic’, opening a New York office in 1979.

In that year Alan was also recruited to help England’s burgeoning environmental lobby, helping what later became the Green Party, to fight the General Election, with a compelling TV broadcast which resulted in a tenfold increase in their membership.

Moving between Europe and the USA, Alan established a reputation as a top ‘A-list’ director of comedy, dialogue and storytelling spots, making many of the most creative and highly thought of commercials of that era and working with most of the great advertising agencies.

He also worked on longer form material, both writing and directing It’s a Drag, a short film based on british drag racing and then the psychological drama ‘Victims’, which was jointly produced by Paramount Pictures and Jennie & Co.

After founding Blake + Company in 1988, Alan continued working in the UK, Europe and the USA on top quality ads. The company was incorporated in the USA in 1994.

Alan has won many awards for his work, including several Gold and Silver Lions at Cannes, Gold Clios in the USA and BTAA arrows in the UK, where he also won the London Creative Circle Award for Best Direction.

Now living in Connecticut, USA, Alan continues to run Blake + Company which now incorporates production of new media, along with tv commercials. He has also recently written a full length drama entitled ‘Dambusters Away’, which is now in development and is currently writing an original TV drama series entitled ‘Cambridge Wheels’
