I guess this is the box where I write in that everything you've said is complete hogwash, that our users love us and we are going to be the next Facebook. I'll resist that urge...
The truth is we haven't done a deep analysis of how to build an engaging product, the 4 R's etc although that makes sense. We've just focused on trying to build a fun and highly challenging news product. I've previously launched two betting exchanges in the UK so I know how engaging they can be. However betting isn't for everyone which is why we are using play money (oh and not wanting to get banged up as well! You guys need to seriously lighten up your betting laws).
The term wisdom of crowds makes my toes curl because it is basically a meaningless phrase invoked to give some crowdsourcing site mystic powers. Hubdub is a market, just like a betting market. Betting markets have a long history of being highly accurate. While we haven't been tracking the Hubdub markets for accuracy I have noticed that our market prices have started to move in line with the equivalent betting markets, which would suggest they are fairly accurate.
